Sounds like a hellalotta eggs to me, but then again, I've never made custard. Let rest 10 minutes after removing from oven. Brush thin slices of pear with more maple syrup and broil until caramelized to make the decorative topping, which should be added just before serving. Bake in oven, uncovered 45 minutes or until knife inserted in center pulls out clean. Maple syrup sweetens the no-bake filling of this easy cheesecake, which can be prepared up to one day ahead. Ladle remaining custard mixture over top until 1/2' from top of pan. Butter remaining raisin bread on one side. Ladle over single layer of raisin bread that has been placed in pan, just until covered. I have found a recipe that sounds like it almost immitates this idea. Rather than in slices, it was served as like a hefty cube of sweet, cinnamony, goodness. The description reads: 'A sweet morning treat of our cinnamon raisin bread baked in a vanilla French custard and sprinkled with powdered sugar.' I just remember it being thick and delicious, with all the bread fused together.
We replaced the mayo with fat-free mayonnaise and reduced-fat sour cream. Now, I know how to make my mom's basic french toast, soaking break in milk and eggs and cinnamon, then frying it up in some butter until DELICIOUS, but I wanted to try to immitate this Baked French Toast I had at The Corner Bakery Cafe. This updated version of a classic appetizer uses only half the egg yolks of the original recipe and calls for soft bread crumbs to help firm up the filling.
The scene: A sunday brunch potluck (if all goes according to plan).
